Galthié is a former French Rugby union scrum-half. He played for Colomiers and Stade Francais. Galthié won 64 caps for France, including 4 Rugby World Cup appearances, as well as captaining France at the 2003 World Cup.
Former French national coach Bernard Laporte has described him as the greatest scrum-half in French history. Galthié was awarded the IRB International Player of the Year in 2002.
Galthié won his only club trophy on his last competitive match, the French championship final with Stade français against Toulouse in June 2003. In 2004, he became the coach of Stade Francais after Nick Mallet departed the club.
In his first season, SF made it to the final of both the Top 14 and Heineken Cup finals, but were beaten in both finals. The following season SF were beaten by Toulouse in the Top 14 semi-final, and they were knocked out of the Heineken Cup by Leicester.
He left Paris in 2008 to become a TV pundit with the French public national channel France 2 and private radio Europe 1. Galthié joined the Argentina coaching staff during their end-of-the-year tour of Europe in November and December 2008. Galthié signed a three-year coaching contract with Montpellier in 2010.
His stint as coach came to an abrupt end at the end of 2014 due to poor relations with the President of Montpellier Rugby Club. In March 2017, Toulon announced that Galthie will took over as director of rugby at Top 14 giants Toulon for the 2017/18 season after it was agreed not to extend the contract of head coach Mike Ford.
In April 2019, it was confirmed that Galthie will succeed Jacques Brunel as France head coach after the 2019 Rugby World Cup while also travelling with the side as an assistant in Japan.
