Bath Rugby hit by double injury return boost

Bath Rugby have been handed a significant lift as winger Will Muir and number eight Alfie Barbeary return to full fitness ahead of the first round of the 2025/26 Investec Champions Cup.
Muir, who earned his first England caps during the summer tour to Argentina, has yet to feature competitively this season after damaging his ankle in a preseason match against Worcester Warriors. The setback also denied him the chance to push for further England involvement during the autumn programme.
Barbeary has also been sidelined with an ankle injury picked up against Bristol Bears in the Premiership Rugby Cup, but both players have now completed their recovery and rejoined the main training group.
Speaking ahead of the European clash with his former club, Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan confirmed the welcome update. He said that both players are available for selection this week and that the coaching team will determine their roles as preparations progress. He added that it is encouraging to see them back on the training field after lengthy absences.
Muir’s return gives van Graan a wealth of firepower on the wings. Henry Arundell stole the spotlight in the recent win at Saracens with two tries, while Joe Cokanasiga delivered a strong performance on the opposite flank. With Muir back in contention, Bath now have three international calibre outside backs competing for starting places.
Barbeary’s comeback adds further depth to a competitive back row. Bath have been well served at number eight recently by Arthur Green and Miles Reid, who both impressed last weekend. Green in particular delivered a standout performance against Saracens star Tom Willis, earning praise from van Graan.
The head coach acknowledged that the squad will continue to rotate as the season intensifies, explaining that planning ahead remains vital even when players hit exceptional form. He noted that while standout displays are celebrated, the team must balance minutes and manage workloads across several demanding weeks.
Both returning players are now in the mix for selection as Bath prepare for the arrival of the Irish province at the Recreation Ground in what promises to be a fiercely contested European opener.
