Bledisloe Cup - 9 Key Moments
- 1871
The All Blacks retain the Bledisloe Cup despite a good comeback from the Wallabies. It was not just the Bledisloe Cup on the line but the nearly four decade Eden Park record too that looked to be torn out of the New Zealand grasp. It was not to be with some key moments from both Cam Roigard and Ardie Savea
3’ Ardie Savea Exposes Wallabies On The Blind:
Savea joins the Lin out maul late and attacks blind making it a three on one as McDermott fails to get defensive numbers over to help. The All Blacks gets a penalty from this and Caleb Clarke scores the opening try
7’ Tupou Vaa’i Turnover:
Vaa’i stops a break started from Pollard exposing the All Blacks at the ruck. They were set to recycle with front foot ball and halted by a great breakdown steal which nearly resulted in a try but the hosts settled for a penalty
17’ James O’Connor Misses Kick To Touch:
Apart from wasting a valuable attacking opportunity this moment also sees the All Blacks run it back, Tate McDermott picks up a game ending injury and Ryan Lonergan takes to the field to make his Wallaby debut.
36’ All Blacks Infringe At The Breakdown:
Clarke was on attack off a scrum deep in their own 22. He was put in space and took contact only for a side entry from a late arriver to gift the Wallabies a chance to score before half time. Harry Potter scores 3 minutes later to take the score to 20-17 at the break.
James O’Connor Kicking Errors:
O’Connor made a few errors in the first half but his second half misses have proved costly with two kicks to touch missed from penalties and a restart kick error
58: Quinn Tupaea Butchers A Try:
New Zealand have numbers wide with a nine point lead and can seal the game but he goes alone with a 2 on 1 outside
61: Ardie Savea Turnover:
Billy Pollard made a break after the Wallabies set up an attack and he flies into the New Zealand 22, Ardie Savea was on the ball so quickly to steal it and win a penalty
68’ Jordie Barrett Under Pressure:
Wallabies mount multiple phases of attack and attack blind late on in the attack. Potter kicks ahead and Jordie Barrett is under massive pressure and his clearing kick slices off his foot. The Wallabies score off a 5m attacking maul from that.
73’ Harry Potter Yellow Card:
Potter forced to scramble after Tupaea made a half break in the Wallaby 22, he gets over the ball but places his hands on the ground, infringing. The Wallabies force a goal line restart after holding the All Blacks up over the line but Cam Roigard seals the game a minute later thanks to some Jordie Barrett brilliance
