Callum Braley hangs up his test boots

Italy scrumhalf Callum Braley has announced his retirement from test rugby.

The 28-year-old, who started the historic 21-22 victory over Wales in the Six Nations has cited family reasons for his decision.

"Although I am beyond grateful for the opportunities I have experienced, I have now decided it is time to put me and my family first. I have really struggled mentally being away from my family for such long periods of time. I’ve missed so much of my children’s short lives already; first steps, first words, and so much more. I wish to be more present as a father, create more stability for my family, and be a constant presence in their lives." Braley said on his Instagram.

Braley earned 15 test caps between 2019 and 2022. He made his test debut against Ireland during the 2019 Six Nations and went on to represent Italy at the Rugby World Cup. His final test match was against Wales in the final round of the Six Nations.

"It has been an incredibly difficult decision to make as I love representing Italy and wearing the Azzurri Blue. I have had some of my proudest moments playing for Italy; making my debut, playing in a World Cup and my last game-winning in Cardiff against Wales. All moments I would have only ever dreamt of happening in my career." he added.

"I feel so lucky to have represented this great country and I hope I have always done that with great pride and honour. But now I am really excited to watch this team grow and get the results they rightfully deserve. Italian rugby has a bright future with some incredibly exciting young players, I’m looking forward to supporting the players and staff whole heartedly."

Kieran Crowley, Italy’s Head Coach, added: “Callum has always been an example on and off the pitch.

“Discipline and his attitude to work are among the qualities that have led him to be one of the points of reference for the team and the group of leaders.

“I had the pleasure of working with him first in Treviso and then with the Italian national team. We had a long conversation about his decision that made me appreciate even more what his human qualities are. I wish Callum the best in his career, on and off the pitch.”

Braley will join Northampton Saints next season.
