Dawson started his rugby while at school at Newcastle School for Boys and Blaydon RFC. Dawson should signs of potential when he made the county side at under 16, 17 and 18, as well as representing North England and England under 18 Counties.
He was signed to the Newcastle Falcons Senior Academy in 2015 and represent Falcons in Singha Premiership Rugby 7's in 2015, later that he was called into England's Sevens team to participate in teh Youth Commonwealth Games.
Dawson feautured for Newcastle during the 2015/16 pre-season and decided to represent Scotland's under 20 side, he qualifies through his parents.
In January 2017, he was named in the Scotland U20s team for the 2017 Six Nations tournament, playing against eventual champions New Zealand.
April 2019 saw him sign a deal with Championship side Cornish Pirates.
In May 2021, he signed a new one-year deal with the side.
