Wallabies vs Lions | 5 Key moments

Wallabies vs Lions | 5 Key moments

The final test of the The British & Irish Lions tour of Australia concluded today, as the Wallabies avoided the three game sweep with a well deserved 22-12 victory, a fitting farewell to longtime Wallaby Nic White. The games followed much drama and will be remembered for years to come, and we take a look at 5 of the key moments that made the biggest difference in the match.

  • HEAVY RAINS

Rain began pouring down in the 12th minute which inevitably saw an increase in handling errors and less highballs being played. This resulted in a 40 minute stoppage in play due to lighting strikes in the 42nd minute.

  • RUSSELL KNOCK-ON

In the 20th minute just minutes just after a scuffle ensued due to a Tadhg Beirne turnover that saw the Lions kill the Australian momentum, The lions were awarded a penalty and went for touch. The visitors found themselves in a very good position, however a knock on by Finn Russell killed their attacking momentum giving Australia the advantage of a scrum, and being forced to defend 19 phases.

  • SHEEHAN CLEANOUT

After Itoje did not return from his HIA, Dan Sheehan took the reigns. There was more controversy that followed at the breakdown, as Wallaby Tom Lynagh was cleared out the acting Lions captain, with what may have seemed to look like an illegal elbow. Lynagh was also taken off for an HIA and did not return, leaving a dent in the Wallabies attack. The decision was not reviewed by the TMO. See below:

  • DYLAN PIETSCH KNOCKON

The 68th minute saw Dylan Pietsch link up with fellow winger Max Jorgenson who could have finished the try himself, but opted to offload to Pietsch who unfortunately knocked the ball on over the Lions try. However in a twist off events, Ronan Kelleher was sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle resulting in a Wallabies scrum. 8 Phases later, substitute scrumhalf Tate McDermott crossed the line to score a 3rd try for the Wallabies.

  • WALLABIES LINEOUT STEAL

A vital lineout steal by Harry Wilson in their own 5m line just minutes after McDermott scored what seemed to be the match winning try, saw the Wallabies take the wind out of the Lions sails. Another momentum killer came just 2 minutes later as Jeremy Williams made another steal deep in opposition territory allowing the Wallanbies to launch an attack with 5 minutes left.
