Damian was educated at Little Heath School and Cardiff University, from where he played club rugby in Wales with Pontypridd. His rugby career began when he attended Cardiff University before moving on to play for Pontypridd in the Welsh national leagues. He has also played for Llantwit Fardre.
He joined Cardiff in the summer of 2007 and made his Blue & Blacks' debut in the pre-season friendly against Pertemps Bees.
His professional time in the game began in 2009 at the Scarlets before leaving in 2012 to link up with the Exeter Chiefs in England.
Welch made 67 appearances over five seasons at Sandy Park before signing to bolster the Cardiff Blues squad for the 2017/18 season.
