Top 14 | Round Two Preview

After its return last week, the TOP 14 continues this weekend with the second round of the season. Five matches are on the schedule for the multiplex, including one on Saturday evening and a clash to close out the round on Sunday evening!

The 3 questions for this 2nd day ⬇️

  • Good news for Clermont?

Last week, during the opening round, ASM Clermont hoped for a better result than a defeat on the pitch of LOU Rugby (40-36). Despite securing a defensive bonus point and a thrilling comeback at the end of the match, Clermont trailed for the entire 80 minutes. This Saturday, Christophe Urios' men will return to their home ground, the Marcel-Michelin stadium , aiming to kick-start their season with a first victory.

For this occasion, ASM will host Stade Français Paris during the multiplex, a match that gave rise to a spectacular back-and-forth last season , with a victory for Clermont (36-32).

  • No false start for USAP?

To see USA Perpignan win their first home game of the season, you have to go back to September 11, 2021, and a victory against Biarritz Olympique. Since then, the Catalans have suffered four consecutive defeats at Aimé-Giral in their first home game of each new season.

But this season, Perpignan is showing a new face , with the ambition to dream bigger. And while the Sang et Or (Blood and Gold) were thought to be struggling in Paris last weekend, they ultimately came very close to making a big impact in the capital . Now, all eyes are on Castres Olympique, USAP's next opponent.

  • The shock of this early season?

In recent seasons, Stade Toulousain – Union Bordeaux-Bègles has become one of the must-see matches. For this new chapter, the French champions and the reigning European champions will meet in the second round of fixtures .

And what about the lineup and the expected matchups? Up front, the Willis brothers should once again face off . In the backline, it goes without saying that the half-back pairings will be key, with Dupont-Ntamack on one side and Lucu-Jalibert on the other . What better way to wrap up this second matchday?

The stat: 12. Successful return in terms of touch

RC Vannes is embarking on its second season in the Top 14, having played its first two years ago. The Bretons made their return to action in Castres, but suffered a defeat. However, there were some very positive aspects to the Vannes performance.

After just one day, Vannes is the only team to have managed all its throws, with 12 catches out of 12 attempts . The Breton lineout thus boasts a 100% success rate, ahead of hosting last season's finalist, Montpellier, this Saturday.

The player to watch: Huw Jones, aboard the ship

Having come close to victory in Bayonne last week, Toulon will play their first match of the season at Mayol this Saturday, against Stade Rochelais.

Toulon will have a formidable player in their ranks : 63-cap Scottish international Huw Jones . Will he start alongside Gaël Fickou, another key signing for Toulon? We'll find out this Saturday evening.
