Otago Claim Ranfurly Shield in Christchurch Classic

Otago have snatched the Ranfurly Shield from Canterbury in a dramatic NPC clash, edging their southern rivals 38–36 in Christchurch.
The challengers spent much of the match chasing the game but struck decisively with just over 10 minutes to play, crossing for a converted try that handed them a narrow two-point advantage. From there, Otago showed grit and composure to repel a desperate Canterbury onslaught in the closing stages.
The contest lived up to the storied history of the Log o’ Wood, coming just a week after Canterbury’s extra-time heroics against Tasman.
Openside flanker Lucas Casey, a standout for Otago and scorer of a crucial second-half try, credited his side’s belief and provincial pride for the turnaround. “We didn’t really get going in the first half, but we knew we were still in the fight,” he told Sky Sport. “This week we really tried to honour those who have gone before us, and hopefully that showed tonight.”
This is Otago’s first Shield triumph since 2020, and they become the fifth team to hold the famous trophy this season. Their first defence will come next Saturday against North Harbour.
