A former Nelson College First XV captain, Anton Segner had an interesting route to playing professional rugby in New Zealand.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany Segner had originally planned to stay for just six months when he arrived in the land of the long white cloud as an international student in 2017. But three years later, Segner was called off the bench in the 51st minute during Tasman's Mitre 10 Cup clash with Southland at Trafalgar Park to make his pro rugby debut.

A highly-rated prospect, Segner is a tough customer with ball in hand and an equally effect defender seeing him slot seamlessly into the style of a New Zealand back rower.

Having arrived in New Zealand off the advice of Kiwi expats in Germany, where he was told that rugby in New Zealand was loved like football in Germany, Segner made a quick impact as he represented New Zealand 16 years old when made his debut for the New Zealand national schoolboy rugby union team against Tonga in 2018.

His debut for Tasman came at the age of 19 having signed a two-year contract with Tasman until 2021.

Segner signed with the Blues for the 2022 Super Rugby season and made his debut for the side in Round 2 against the Hurricanes.

In his 2022, he played 7 games in total making 53 tackles and 23 ball carries.
