Champions Cup round three rekindles rivalries

Round 3 brings a powerful sense of familiarity as three iconic Finals rivalries are renewed across Europe. Northampton Saints travel to face Union Bordeaux Bègles, while Leinster host Stade Rochelais in what has become one of the defining fixtures of modern European rugby.
This weekend has been eagerly anticipated since the pool schedule was released. With four recent finalists meeting again, the group stage now moves into a decisive and unforgiving phase.
The Leinster and Stade Rochelais rivalry has been years in the making. Their 2021 semi final hinted at something special, but it was in 2022 that La Rochelle truly made history. A dramatic late push saw Arthur Retière score in the 79th minute, swinging the match in their favour and sparking scenes of celebration among the French supporters in Marseille as they lifted their first European title.
The following season brought a rematch in Dublin. Leinster started at pace, racing into a 17 point lead and raising hopes that this would finally be their moment. However, Ronan O’Gara’s side remained patient and composed. Tries from Jonathan Danty and UJ Seuteni before the break shifted the momentum, while Antoine Hastoy’s calm and accurate goal kicking steadily closed the gap.
As the contest tightened, La Rochelle’s physical strength came to the fore. Georges Henri Colombe powered over late on to bring the scores within a single point. Hastoy then stepped up once more, converting under immense pressure to give the visitors their first lead of the match.
That kick secured a second consecutive European title for Stade Rochelais and sealed the 2023 Final as one of the greatest in the competition’s history. Back at the same venue this Saturday, Ronan O’Gara will be hoping his side can summon that same resilience and belief once again.
