Cornel “Koppa” Smit joins Cardiff Rugby

Cardiff Rugby announced the signing of 28-year-old centre Cornel Smit, who joins the club from the Vodacom Bulls.

A versatile and intelligent midfielder capable of playing anywhere across the backline, Smit brings proven pedigree following spells with Western Province, the Stormers, and most recently the Bulls. His blend of physicality, distribution skills and calm decision-making adds significant depth and experience to Cardiff’s midfield options.

Smit—affectionately known as “Koppa” by his teammates—was not only a standout rugby talent growing up, but also a top academic performer. Educated at the prestigious Bishops College, he left school with six distinctions.

After progressing through Western Province’s youth system, Smit made his senior debut in Cape Town featuring for the Stormers in Round 2 of the Pro14 Rainbow Cup SA against the Bulls Super Rugby. His consistency and sharp rugby instincts earned him a move to Pretoria, and he quickly made his mark with the Bulls, standing out for his work rate, accuracy in contact and ability to slot in at fly-half, both centre positions and on the wing seamlessly.

Cardiff Rugby Coach Corniel Van Zyl said:

“Cornel is a fantastic addition for us. He’s a versatile, mature and intelligent player with true quality at 10, the centre and on the wing. He’s competed at a high level in South Africa for a number of years and brings the sort of experience and composure that will really complement our backline. Everything we’ve heard about his professionalism and character has been outstanding.”

Smit shared his excitement about making the move to the Welsh capital:

“I’m really looking forward to joining Cardiff. The club has a proud history, a passionate fanbase, and plays a brand of rugby that suits the way I want to express myself on the pitch. I can’t wait to get started and contribute on and off the field.”

Cornel Smit will link up with his new teammates immediately as Cardiff look to continue their impressive start to the 25/26 campaign.
