Van Der Westhuizen began refereeing matches in 2007 for the Western Province club league.
He began refereeing first-class games in 2011, his debut seeing him officiate between Free State Cheetahs v Falcons in Bloemfontein.
On the international scene, Van Der Westhuizen is a regular on the Sevens World Series panel, having cultivated for himself a reputation as a very effective, reliable referee.
