An experienced and robust hooker, Van Dyk began his career at the Leopards where he jumped straight into Currie Cup in 2005. Signing with Griquas two years later, it wasn't long before the hooker caught the eye of the Super Rugby franchises, where he represented the Cheetahs (2007 -2008) and the Lions (2009-2010). A move to the Pumas in 2010 saw outstanding performances, particularly in the 2011 Currie Cup campaign. A stint with Boland then saw a small journey to the coast to link up South Western Districts, where he played his 150th first class match at the end of 2012.
